American Caesar's Mushroom:
Colorful Specimen

By William T. Hathaway
Caesar's Mushroom (Amanita caesarea)

This close-up of the American Caesar's mushroom (Amanita caesarea) struck me as being a worthwhile snapshot. The formation of the ring or annulus and the remaining universal veil forming the cup or volva were conspicuously displayed. The radial striations on the cap were also clearly demonstrated.

Occasionally we all manage to stumble across an impressive, colorful mushroom specimen which seems to have demanded depiction. Surely I had written an article concerning this species before, but this particular view was most impressive to me. Perhaps it will help you to identify this species should you run across it in your outdoor meanderings.

Also see this illustration in larger format, more mushrooms, and a general warning about mushrooms of the Amanita genus.
